End of the World postponed

The BBC report that the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva will be shut off until spring 2009 while engineers probe a magnet failure.

As a science fiction fan I am sure I can come up with many more ways that the World could end between now and next March if the media wish to continue the speculation.
Comments:
If you are looking for further ways of ending the world in a major disaster, may I suggest you read "Catastrophes and Lesser Calamities - the causes of Mass Extinctions" by Tony Hallem.

Chapter 11 - The influence of Humans, is an interesting chapter; ditto chapter 7 - Climate Change.

Finding it hard to hide my glee - unbelievable sums of money spent building this thing that's supposed to discover stuff no-one really understands and then as soon as they switch it on it breaks!

Chapter 4 - Impact by comets and asteroids

My favourite - Volcanic Activity (Chap. 8) Yellowstone National Park, the supervolcano which is overdue by 5,000 years for it's big irruption.
